Where does the time go? I could write several pages on what's been going on, but then again, once you saw how long it was, you'd skip it! At any rate, I have been on the road a lot this month (actually a 20 year record). My "new" Civic (2 years old) is a mere six months away from overtaking my mom's '97 Honda in miles! Ouch! I've been to Charleston three times in the past two weeks for two different surgeries (not mine), along with my usual trips to hospitals in Columbia and Orangeburg.Last Tuesday and Wednesday, in less than 24 hours, I was with a family who would say good-bye to their father who would pass away two days later, then the next day I was with an 88 year old (she's 89 today) who had major abdominal surgery in Charleston, and I came back through Orangeburg and made it to the hospital 30 minutes before a church member had a C-section to deliver a healthy baby boy! I still am amazed that God lets me do what I do, and lets me in on people's lives at very significant moments. The thing is, significant moments are around us all the time if we don't get too busy, frustrated, distracted, impatient (you finish the list).
We tend toward living in routines and ruts. I think it reinforces our false sense of control. Sad thing to drive through life and never notice the scenery, never taking the time to talk to people along the way. Remember what Paul said in 2 Corinthians 5:17: "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!" And being the new creation, shouldn't we have new eyes, new vision to see the world with a renewed (and daily renewable) sense of gratitude, and wonder, and anticipation that at any moment God can break through into our lives with a significant moment.
I took this picture shortly after the beautiful Ravenel Bridge was completed in Charleston, before they destroyed the old one. It reminds me of how Christ died not only to get us into heaven, but to give us a new route along the way...a better route, more significant route, more meaningful route.
